Google Reader will stop working on July 1, export your data

  • Google Reader, a popular news-tracking service, will stop working on July 1.
  • Users should look for alternatives, such as RssDemon, before the shutdown.
  • It is possible to export data from Google Reader using Google Takeout.
  • Applications that rely on Google Reader will face problems after its closure.

Google Reader end of service

It is one of the most efficient services that Google has and allows you to follow in a structured and comfortable way the news that occurs on the web pages that are registered. And, surprisingly, today a notice window indicates that the service will be discontinued on July 1. We refer to Google Reader.

The truth is that I do not find a clear reason for this to be the case ... except that in Mountain View they plan to present another option that it does the same but that it is new and better… Of course, they run the risk of users migrating to another application and, once they are used to it, they no longer want to change. Or maybe they want power Google Currents. The fact is that Reader will pass away and, in my case, it is a drama.

At least, reasonable time has been given for users to look for another possibility to do the same or, at least, in a similar and equally simple way. Options are on the market, certainly, and perhaps one of the most interesting is rssdemon, Which is Delivery to Italy takes one or two business days. The truth is that I still do not understand the abandonment of this development by Google.

Export your data from Google Reader

Once the impact of the news has passed, if you use Google Reader you surely understand this, it is time to think about how you can export the pages and information that are stored there. Well, the truth is that it is quite simple: you use the tool Google Takeout to receive the subscription file in (XML) format and, in JSON files, the following data arrives: people you follow, followers, starred and liked elements, what you have shared, notes created and comments. Everything is as simple as clicking on this link once you have a Google Reader session open and get it by pressing the button Create File and later on Download.

By the way, and finally, what will happen to the applications that "pull" directly from Google Reader? The futro is a single color for them: black. Therefore, if you jump to another option, you must be sure that the information is not acquired directly from the Mountain View service, but independently.
