Although with the arrival of applications such as WhatsApp, many of us no longer use the short message service or SMS, one of the options that we can use the most is automatically delete old messages, something that as you will see is really easy to achieve on Android both in the default application and in Hangouts.
When your phone does not have much memory, there are several ways to achieve free up internal storage. One of them is get rid of all old text messages, both SMS and Hangouts. Today we will teach you how to automatically allow this deletion of messages so that we do not have to worry more and thus easily get space both in the Default Messages application and in Hangouts.
Deleting messages in Hangouts
If you have a Google Android smartphone like the Nexus 5, you probably use Hangouts as one of your favorite apps to connect with your friends and family. For almost a year, Hangouts is capable of receiving SMS from the terminal so that in a single application we control practically all the messages we receive. Well, if you have this option enabled, you will also be able to automatically delete the oldest messages.
To do this, all you have to do is go to Settings -> SMS and in the section Advanced, select Delete old messages. In this way, when our device begins to have storage problems, Hangouts will automatically take care of deleting the oldest messages to gain memory.
Deleting messages in the default application
In every Android device we will find an application called Messages in which we will receive both SMS and MMS. Well, in it we can choose a text message limit, eliminating all those old ones after exceeding the limit. For the process to be automatic, we will have to go to Settings and in the Storage section, check the box Delete old messages.
Immediately below we find the option Text message limit, which is normally 500 by default, although we can change it to our liking depending on the needs of the terminal.
As you can see, the process is really simple and thus you will be able to automate a quite undesirable task while increasing the available space. As always, we recommend you take a look at our tutorials section to learn how to make a more professional and complete use of your Android.
