Today's mobile connections are not what they should be, nor what they will be in a few years. Today we live with the limit of 1 or 2 GB. And only the ones that pay a hefty amount have up to 4GB. This is why it is very important to prevent applications from consuming data in the background. But how can this be avoided?
Android built-in setting
To begin with, we will say that it will not be necessary to install any additional application, nor will you need to have your smartphone rooted, since it is actually an option that is integrated into our Android smartphone or tablet. Or at least, that is how it will happen in most of them, as it is an Android option.

What is?
Imagine that you have downloaded a large file in Chrome from your smartphone when you are at home. It is a very heavy file, and even with the WiFi connection it will take a while. You forget about him, and you go out into the street. Your smartphone connects to the mobile network, but keeps downloading the file. When you want to find out, you have used up your entire data rate. To see which applications consume more data in the background, you just have to go to Settings> Data usage, and then you will see each of the applications in the list of apps ordered according to the mobile data consumption of each one of them. By clicking on them you will be able to see the data consumed in the foreground and the data consumed in the background, and in this way know if you have spent data "voluntarily", while you were managing said app, or "involuntarily", with actions that you you have not carried out.
How to avoid data consumption in the background?
This "inadvertent" data consumption can be avoided. In fact, you should have already seen this option. If you have followed the steps, you should be in Settings> Data usage> [Specific application], and you should be seeing what the app consumes in the first and second plan. Just below you find the option "Restrict background data". All those applications that have this option active will not consume mobile data in the background. Although don't worry, they will if we have a WiFi network.
