At least that is what some users of these smartphones already claim, without knowing if it is an update limited to a certain region, or an update that is being released worldwide. We talk about the two mid-range smartphones from Motorola, the Motorola Moto G Original and the Motorola Moto G 2014, both are updated to Android Lollipop 5.0.1.
El Motorola Moto G 2014 was the first smartphone to update to Android 5.0 Lollipop without taking into account Nexus smartphones and tablets. However, it seems that this Motorola smartphone would also be the first that is not a Nexus that updates to Android Lollipop 5.0.1, the new version of the operating system that has already been launched with some new features, especially for smart watches.
The most relevant thing is the fact that the update would not only be for this year's version of the smartphone, but also for the Motorola Moto G Original, which was released last year. Shortly after the Android 5.0 Lollipop update was released for the Motorola Moto G 2014, it was said that the update for the Motorola Moto G Original, but the truth is that it has not been so. Apparently, the real reason why the update has not yet arrived could be that the company wanted to launch the update to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, which is what some users are now receiving with the Motorola Moto G Original, such as and as you can see in the screenshots below.
Deployment, updates, and how to receive the official OTA
Hopefully, updates can be installed from the Motorola Device Manager, which is the program for computers with which to manage the smartphone, as well as from the smartphone itself in Settings> About phone> Software update. Most likely the versions free be the first to update, and then smartphones sold by carriers will receive the new version. We'll try to find out if this update is limited to any region or if it will soon be available in Spain so we can provide you with that information.
Motorola also usually updates its app “Motorola Updates” (OTA) available on Google Play to enable the firmware's arrival. To speed up delivery:
- Check manually install the OTA from Settings and reboot if it doesn't appear.
- Connect a stable WiFi, with battery above 50% and free space enough.
- Make a backup of your important data before updating.
Advanced Options: AOSP 5.1 ROM and Google Play Edition 5.1
For those who wish to go beyond the OTA, the community offers alternatives. There are AOSP ROMs based on Android 5.1 for the Moto G (1st generation). These builds may lack native SMS app (an alternative can be used), they do not offer support for CDMA networks and, in Dual SIM models, it might not recognize the second SIM. Its installation requires unlock bootloader, Have root and install a custom recovery (e.g. TWRP) for later flash the ROM file and the Google Apps, previously carrying out the wipes of data and caches.
Another very popular route is to upgrade to Android 5.1 Google Play Edition (GPe) through tools of one click that have emerged in the XDA community. These solutions automate the process of installing ROM, root and recovery almost simultaneously. They allow updating from Android 5.0.1 or 5.0.2, and even from ROMs like CyanogenMod 12, ResurrectionRemix, BlissPop or Euphoria OS. The result is a “clean” image Android (without Motorola's own apps) and with complete data erasure, so a backup is essential. Each user is responsible of process.
In the case of Moto G Google Play Edition, when the package is distributed Android 5.0.1 manually, some users point to a file of around 380 MB and a build identifier LRX21Z different from the one seen on certain Nexus. If you choose to install it manually, it must be done from a custom recovery and after a full backup.
Models, tools and important notices
The most popular tutorials for official ROMs focus on the models XT1032 (Moto G 2013) and XT1064 (Moto G 2014). In advanced processes such as unlocking the bootloader, flashing recoveries or ROMs, it is key to have ADB & Fastboot correctly installed on the computer and activate the USB debugging. Remember that unlocking and modifying the system can void the warranty, and that any error could render the device inoperable.
Those who do not receive official support or are looking for higher versions on other models can consider community projects such as LineageOS in its compatible variants. In all cases, it is advisable to perform a backup of the current state from recovery, follow guides specific to your variant and confirm the stability of each build before using it daily.
Both the Moto G Original such as Moto G 2014 are receiving Android Lollipop 5.0.1 Over-the-air (OTA) updates will be rolled out in stages. If you prefer the official route, wait for notification and update safely. If you opt for advanced routes (AOSP or GPe), make sure you meet the requirements, understand the limitations, and assume the risks.
