The MediaTek Helio X30 processor is now official. What does it offer?

  • The MediaTek Helio X30 is a ten-core processor, designed to compete in the high-end of mobile devices.
  • It uses 10nm manufacturing technology, offering significant improvements in performance and energy efficiency.
  • Supports up to 8GB of RAM and up to 40-megapixel cameras with advanced video capabilities.
  • The first devices with this processor are expected to hit the market in the second half of 2017.

A processor has just been announced that everything indicates that it will be one of the great protagonists of the year 2017, which is when it will begin to be seen on mobile devices with Android. We refer to MediaTek Helio X30, a SoC that inside includes nothing less than ten cores and that is a clear bet of this manufacturer to take the pulse of the high-end product.

This new model maintains the use of technology Tri-Cluster, which both favors good operation according to the requirements at all times and, at the same time, reduces the consumption of the processor when working in all kinds of situations. The point is that the internal division of ten "cores" is as follows: four Cortex-A73s that work at a frequency of 2,8 GHz and are designed for the most demanding jobs. It has four other 53 GHz Cortex-A2,5s designed to carry out actions that are not very demanding, but do require some power. And finally, two 35 GHz Cortex-A2 cores that are used when, for example, the terminal is idle and works in the background.

MediaTek opening

An important step in the MediaTek Helio X30 is that the manufacturing technology that has been used is of 10 nm (FinFET), which is why there is an important leap compared to previous models of the manufacturer that used twenty nanometers (an example is the X25). Additionally, the GPU chosen to be the starting component in the components is a PowerVR 7XT, which independently includes four cores inside and promises a really good performance with games and offers support for virtual reality -Daydream-.

More details of the MediaTek Helio X30

The truth is that with the aforementioned, this processor already has a very good "look", but there are more features that make it attractive and that it is clearly an element designed to be integrated into the most powerful devices. For example, the amount of RAM supported by the MediaTek Helio X30 is 8 GB maximum -on two channels at 1600 MHz-, this being the LPDDR4 type. In addition, the support with LTE Cat.12 networks is confirmed, so the connectivity is very good.

Regarding the cameras that the MediaTek Helio X30 will allow to use (yes, the processors have a lot to say in this), those that the Asian manufacturer has confirmed are those that integrate a sensor of 40 megapixels -with video capture at 24 Mpx-. In addition, it will be possible to work with a number of frames per second of 120 FPS, which means that slow motion will be present, in this case with a resolution of 8 Mpx.

Everything suggests that the first models with MediaTek Helio X30 will be put into play in Asia in the second half of the year 2017As the component manufacturing with 10nm technology has been delayed. The fact is that this processor is already official and, the truth is that the company has clearly made an important leap in its most powerful offering. What is your opinion?
