Samsung Galaxy Note 3 metallic with flexible screen

We said that four versions of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 would arrive and it seems that it will be fulfilled. Two are already on the market, the Galaxy Note 3 with a Snapdragon processor and the one with SoC Exynos. The budget version with LCD screen seems to be on the way. And the last one would be a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 metallic with a flexible screen. Its launch would occur in November.

We've talked a lot about the flexible displays that we're working on. They were already talked about at the launch of the Galaxy S3, as well as in the subsequent ones of the Galaxy Note 2, the Galaxy S4, and finally the Galaxy Note 3. However, in no case have we seen the commercial launch of a smartphone from the South Korean company with a flexible screen, but we could be about to see it. What the leaks indicate is that Samsung would launch a special version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, a limited version that would have some really important new features, such as the flexible OLED screen that we have talked about for so many months. But that would not be the only novelty, and it is that it would also be manufactured with a metal casing instead of the classic plastic casing.

Flexible OLED display and premium finishes

The adoption of a flexible OLED display not only does it allow for more daring curves or designs: it provides greater resistance impact by eliminating traditional rigid layers, and opens the door to active edges or slightly curved surfaces that improve ergonomics. These organic sheets, on plastic substrates, are much less fragile than conventional glass, which, according to industry sources, makes them practically unbreakable under normal twisting.

In parallel, this special Note 3 would bet on a metal chassis, a step up from the standard model's leather-like textured plastic finish. The metal adds a sense of quality and rigidity, helps dissipate heat and fits in with a design with straighter lines and a textured perimeter frame, very recognizable in the range. To preserve the panel's flexibility, Samsung could use specific anti-scratch protective layers and polymer combinations on the touch cover, avoiding the addition of glass that would detract from the overall benefits.

It would be a limited edition

And it won't be a version that everyone will be able to buy. We're not saying this because of the price, which is currently something totally unknown, but because it would be a Limited EditionThe reason it's a limited edition has a lot to do with Samsung's capabilities in manufacturing flexible OLED displays. production of the same It's not yet possible to do so on a mass scale, so free sales have been ruled out, as a huge sale of this device would mean Samsung wouldn't be able to manufacture enough units. A limited edition allows them to gauge how the market would receive a smartphone of this type without it becoming uncontrolled. Depending on the market's reaction, they may consider moving to mass production of flexible OLED displays, making the appropriate investment and hoping to recoup it over time.

In addition to testing the reception, a limited launch helps to control manufacturing performance (yields) of the new panel, optimize the supply chain of flexible touch covers and validate solutions for scratch protection specific for polymers. Samsung, in line with other innovation initiatives, uses controlled runs to minimize risks and fine-tune costs before scaling up.

Galaxy Note 3 specifications that serve as a basis

The flexible-metallic edition is based on the standard Note 3 platform, a 5,7 inch phablet who has already demonstrated technical strength. These are the key points, relevant to understanding the special model:

  • Screen: Super AMOLED FullHD (1.920 x 1.080), ~386 dpi, great brightness and viewing angles designed for multimedia.
  • Processors by market: Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 up to 2,3 GHz with Adreno 330 GPU, or 5 Exynos Octa with 1,9/1,3 GHz clusters.
  • Conference proceedings: 3GB RAM and storage 32 / 64 GB expandable via microSD.
  • Battery: removable, around 3.200 mAh, aimed at long sessions of use.
  • Cameras: rear of 13 SM with video 4K is 30 fps, 1080p at 60 fps and 720p at 120 fps; 2 MP front with 1080p.
  • Dimensions and weight: 151,2 x 79,2 x 8,3 mm and 168 g, with a metal perimeter frame and leather-like back in the base model.
  • Audio: Hi-Res sound support up to 192 kHz/24 bits.

In physical connectivity, the USB 3.0 Micro‑B, the first port of its kind on a mobile phone at the time, which accelerates the transfers and load from a computer (up to 900 mA compared to 500 mA for USB 2.0). This connector is compatible with traditional microUSB cables, although it does not take advantage of the maximum speed.

Software with S Pen and improved multitasking

The S Pen is the heart of the Note 3 and, by extension, the flexible model. With Air Command A circular menu with five key functions is displayed: Action Memo (handwriting is converted into actions like calling or saving contacts), Scrapbook (cut and organize content), S finder (search in notes, apps and web), Pen Window (floating windows for quick tasks) and Screen writing (note on captures).

La multi-window allows you to open two apps at the same time, share content by drag and drop and, in certain cases, run double instance from the same app. The package is completed with a content panel type My Magazine, as well as utilities such as Smart Scroll/Pause or Samsung Knox to improve security in professional environments.

Connectivity, ports and accessories

The connection ecosystem is high-end: LTE Advanced (up to 150/50 Mbps depending on the network), WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and GLONASS, infrared for remote control, MHL 2.0 for video output and NFC. Sensors include the usual ones, as well as gestures, temperature, moisture y Hall (to detect cases). There are variations by region and operator, maintaining the technical core.

In accessories, the family admits S View Cover and designer cases (previous examples include Moschino or Nicholas Kirkwood), so a metal-flexible edition could be accompanied by optimized covers to protect the new panel without compromising its curvature.

The presentation of the new Samsung Galaxy Note 3 would take place in October, reaching the market the following month, in November. Beyond the calendar, what is relevant is that this flexible and metallic variant would serve as technological showcase and a real test bench for future mass production of flexible OLED displays in the range.

This special edition combines screen innovation, premium chassis and the solid foundation of the Note 3: power, an advanced S Pen, full connectivity, and generous battery life. If the market response is positive, we'll see the flexible technology integrated into more devices and form factors.
