How to Play Your Local Audio Files on YouTube Music

  • YouTube Music has added the option to listen to local files, a feature that was exclusive to Google Play Music.
  • While you can play local music, you can't add it to existing playlists on YouTube Music.
  • It is not possible to play local music on external devices such as Smart TV or Chromecast.
  • The new feature is in development and has not yet been rolled out globally to all users.

YouTube Music local audio

The reason why Google Play Music has not yet been fully replaced by YouTube Music is because there are some interesting functionalities that still cannot be used in YouTube Music that can be used in the veteran Play Music. But now one of the most important ones has been added.

And is that now Now we can listen to our local files, that is, the music that we have previously downloaded and have its file on our phone. We can do this in Play Music for a long time, while in YouTube Music we could only play the music that is in its own content, as if it were Spotify.

About a month ago we already said that you could use YouTube Music as a player for your local files, but you could only do it if you entered your file explorer and you selected to open the file with YouTube Music, that was the first step that Google put to use this function, but this was the only way, and as you can see, it was not the most comfortable way.

But now the functionality has been added natively in the application, some users have received it and shared the screenshot, but it is not yet released globally. Anyway, we have observed what has been commented and we show you how to use it, to be already prepared for the global launch of the function.

How to listen to our music on YouTube Music

To listen to our own music on YouTube Music, the first of all, of course, will be to open the app. Once inside we can go to Artists and Álbumes or other similar sections in the section of Library.

Once inside, a new tab will appear with the name Device files, If we go to that tab we can browse our files in the same way as we would with Google Play Music.

We select the file we want and in this way we will already be playing our music locally.

Shadows and lights

But all that glitters is not gold, and it is that the functionality is still very green to be able to replace the veteran Google music application. Why? Easy, you can't add your local songs to playlists you have created in YouTube Music, that is, if you have your playlists created with YouTube Music, you will not be able to add your local music to these lists.

Maybe you can live with it, but there are a couple of differential factors that also need to be improved, you can't add your local music to the queue either, so if you are playing music on YouTube and you want to add your own song to the queue, you will not be able to do so.

And last but not least, and it is a compelling reason for not making the leap to the application yet, is that local files they cannot be played on another device, that is, we will not be able to cast on our Smart TV, console or chromecast. Something very vital for many users.

Waiting

We will keep waiting to receive the update that allows us to play music from our phone with YouTube Music, but we will also wait for this novelty to be polished to have a full integration experience of it, as we would have in Google Play Music. Do you think it will take a long time?
